What to Send Your Client to Show You Care

After years of belt-tightening in the wake of the Great Recession, businesses in America are finally starting to spend again. According to a recent survey from American Express, 44 percent of managers surveyed said they plan on sending corporate gifts during the holidays.  What do they buy?  It depends on the business, of course.The tradition of sending fruit baskets and fruit cakes to clients began in the early 20th century. Although they are still quite popular, most managers are looking for something a little less perfunctory.  It is for this reason that some companies are expanding their corporate gift budgets in the quest for more original presents.

Why they matter?People like to feel appreciated. It really is that simple. If a client feels ignored or taken for granted, there is a much greater risk that he will jump ship. There is, of course, no substitute for good service and competitive prices. You could buy your client the greatest present on earth and he probably still wouldn't stay if his business needs are not being met. With that said, a great gift can only serve to strengthen a good working relationship.  Remember, thoughtfulness goes a long way.

Because they take advantage of economies of scale, corporations almost always offer lower prices on goods and services than smaller entities. But did you know that small businesses account for 99.7 percent of all employer firms in America, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration?  How could this be? Because price is not the be-all and end-all in the world of business! Yes, it is extremely important. But clients also want to feel like more than a number.  They don't want to have to wait for an hour on the phone just to speak with someone from customer service.Personal relationships have built countless businesses and they will continue to do so in the future.  Sending a client a personal or at least unique gift will let him know that you appreciate his business; and that may help you establish a better connection with important customers.When to buy?

As we mentioned, most corporate gifts are sent during the holiday season. However, every client is different.  In fact, these presents often go further when they are completely unexpected. If you just closed a big deal or if your client is admitted to the hospital, it is always a good idea to send a "get well soon" or "thank you" card and/or gift. This will let them know that you know that there are more important things than business.What to buy?According to the experts, it is up to five times cheaper to keep an existing customer than it is to find a new one. This makes perfect sense if you think about it a bit.  Most businesses spend a substantial portion of annual revenues on advertising; and there is absolutely no guarantee that these marketing campaigns will attract loyal customers. They may help get them through the door, but that doesn't mean they'll come back. A repeat customer is almost as good as money in the bank. As long as you deliver a consistent level of service and don't take them for granted, they should return.The single most popular combination in the business gift market is gourmet foods and wines.  This could include anything from exotic fruits to decadent chocolates.  About one-third of corporate gifts include this combination. The good news is that they don't have to cost you an arm and a leg.  Most fruit sellers and chocolatiers offer popular boxes and baskets for less than one hundred dollars.Presentation is everything

Online sellers have been a great boon to business owners across America.  In the time it would take to make their morning coffee, they can order a box or basket of chocolates or fruit.  These orders can be sent directly to their clients, often in only a day or two.  However, most experts say that corporate gifts have the most impact when they are delivered in person.  In other words, it may be best to have the basket or box of gourmet chocolates or exotic fruit delivered to your place of business. You can then wrap it on your own and take it to your client.

Add the little extras

No matter what you buy, it truly is the thought that counts. Yes, mom was right! An easy way to make your present more personal is to actually spend on extras like packaging, cards, and delivery. Always include a hand-written card that your clients will appreciate, based on his personality. If he's a joker, get him a funny card. If he's sentimental, buys a sincere one and add a personal note.
